Portable Stress Meter

I’ve always wanted to play with a biofeedback machine but the really nice one’s, like they would use in hospitals are very expensive - in the thousands. This is a little portable stress meter that costs $400. It helps you establish a relaxing breathing technique. I’d like to get my hands on one to test.

I have high blood pressure, a type-A personality, and a deadline-driven job. So I needed this biofeedback machine, which trained me to chill out like a yogic master. First, I inserted my finger into the pulse monitor. Then, it directed me to inhale and exhale for different lengths of time while it determined which pattern slowed my heart rate the most — in my case, it was exhaling for a seven count. The StressEraser then charted my ticker’s pitter-patter on its backlit LCD screen, sounding a chime when it was time to exhale (so I could keep my eyes closed). After just five minutes, a day in the office felt like a stroll on the beach. — B.L.
