LSD not Linked to Chromosonal Damage

I am not a hallucinogen advocate. LSD use certainly is not necessary and can be confusing and bring bad karma due to heedlessness. But I do not believe that all drugs are inherently harmful. When done with mindfullness and a correct intention, hallucinogenics can help to reveal hidden assumptions about our situation and provide a new perspective that reveals the interdependency of phenomenon.

Recently I was told that, “If you’re going to do acid, you better not think of having kids”; LSD use causes chromosonal damage. I had always thought that no negative serious health risks were associated with using LSD and so I thought I’d look into this more.

In his book, “The Natural Mind”, Dr. Andrew Weil writes that the original hypothesis was never tested and that a later study showed no link between chromosonal damage and LSD.

Excerpt:

All of these logical flaws in the medical arguments against LSD were obvious in 1967. They do not mean that the hypothesis should never have been published, but surely it should not have been promoted by the medical profession, the press, and the National Institute of Mental Health without more thought. And it is significant that these logical flaws were first pointed out in the Berkeley Barb and other underground newspapers at least eight months before the New England Journal of Medicine voiced similar doubts. The necessary prospective studies were not published until the end of 1969 (2). Not surprisingly, they failed to demonstrate any relationship between LSD use and chromosomal changes. They generated very little national publicity.

I looked for information supporting the claim that LSD causes chromosonal breakdown but only found some Christian sites trying to scare people away from drug use.
