MySpace

Lately I’ve seen a lot of grief given to MySpace. Several writers are saying that it is a bad place, that it harbors vacuous and low class people. I think what they fail to realize is that this has little to do with MySpace and more to do with people. MySpace is a reflection of who we are as a society, it only offers tools to help people to contact each other efficiently, to communicate with the world. The message transmitted is often shallow and lusty, full of small “i”. But I think that many, many people are living life on this level. Snackrabbit has disagreed with this point in the past, saying, ‘how do you know?’. Well, I look at what sells. I figure that the marketers are providing what poeple want because they want to maximize their profits. So check out what magazines are on the front rack of every grocery store. How to please your woman, how to be pleased by your woman, who is popular, what is gross, what is scary, how to get a great body.

So I am not here to pick on MySpace. And I’m not here to pick on society at large. In fact here’s a little MySpace page you can visit that is a nice guide to practicing Buddhism (for those of you who know my wife, Tanya, this is not the same person). So we can’t really have this sweeping generalization of MySpace, the Internet, Society, or anything because there is the one person who is trying to help themselves and help others to be happier. That person is truely a shining jewel in an ocean of trouble.
